About Us

Daphne Lee Centre is a non-profit organisation in South Africa whose mission is to provide a safe and caring environment for adults with disabilities.

The Centre was established on 3 April 1981 as an initiative by Sr. Daphne Lee who identified a need for a place of safety for physically and mentally challenged adults who could not actively participate in the working environment. The Centre was then situated at 4 Tolmay Street, Neserhof, Klerksdorp and there were only 21 day workers at the Centre. With fundraising and other initiatives over the years the Centre moved to its current address, at 10 Irene Street on 1 February 1994 and can now accomidate 38 residents and 22 day workers.
Service Delivery Capacity:

Day Care Programme

The Organisation has a residential brick building with running water, electricity and sewerage connected to municipality drainage. There are paved pathways and a kitchen, dining hall, storage as well as laundry facilities. This building can accommodate 38 residents as well as a night shift staff member. We currently have 6 girls rooms and 4 boys rooms.

There is a brick building that has three creative workshops, three vehicles and five (17) staff members permanently employed to provide a variety of creative, spiritual, physical and social activities for the fifty nine (60) clients who participate in the Day-Care Programme. These activities include: basket weaving, needlework, wire clamp making, bocce, floor hockey and others.
In the workshops every effort is made to increase clients self-confidence by encouraging use of their own initiative as well as rewarding clients for participating and completing designated chores/tasks.
We also provide training in a variety of fine motor skills through participation in:
- Basket weaving
- Wire clamp making
- Needlework
- Art activities
- Play therapy
